`Info systems audit must to curb cyber crimes'

Our Bureau

Kochi , Dec. 29

IN the wake of ingenious cyber threats, attacks and crimes, the Information Systems Audit and Control Association (ISACA), Cochin Chapter, has mooted a compulsory Information Systems Audit in all Government and semi-Government organisations using IT.

The association said that though Government and private organisations are extremely dependent on IT, awareness about data preservation and security is very poor. This is mainly due to the absence of compulsory Information Systems Audit and other mandatory security measures in India, ISACA's new President, Mr K. P. Paulson, and Secretary, Mr Babu A. Kallivayalil, said.

They also expressed concern over the total absence of adequate security measures to protect data and information in the event of a disaster. Data disasters are the order of the day due to man made and natural calamities. Virus attacks, hacking, terrorist attacks and natural calamities such as floods, earthquakes and tsunamis are causing tremendous loss by damaging data and information systems.

After a disaster, only the organisations, which have effective information management systems such as business continuity plans and disaster recovery measures in place, will be able to restart operations without colossal losses. Offsite data storage, data mirroring, periodic back-up of data and mock disaster recovery drills are the normally used techniques, they said.

ISACA, with chapters in 116 countries, acts as the nodal agency for controlling the profession of information security, audit, management and control. The organisation, with headquarters in the US, has nine chapters in India, including a chapter at Kochi.
