THE Tamilnadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry has appealed to the Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation (Independent charge), Mr Praful Patel, to expedite the provision of aviation facilities at the Madurai airport.
A delegation from the chamber led by its President, Mr S. Rethinavelu, which met the Minister at New Delhi recently, in a memorandum submitted to the Minister has said that the city has been developing as one of the industrially advancing cities in the country.
Nearly 500 passengers have been moving in and out of the airport daily. The air traffic movement both in terms of the number of flights and passengers have been higher compared to Tiruchi, as per a study of the Airport Authority of India.
Initially, at least direct flights to New Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and Thiruvananthapuram should be operated, the chamber has emphasised.
The airport should be upgraded as an international airport as sizable numbers of passengers from the southern region proceed to foreign destinations, boarding the flights at Tiruchi and Chennai. Sizable quantity of cargo also moves out of this region. "We have undertaken a detailed survey... . to substantiate our claim with statistical data," the chamber has added. It has further requested the Minister to set up an aviation university at Madurai, to train pilots, technicians and ground staff.
With the Government's open-sky policy, new generation private air carriers are expanding, necessitating substantial additional trained staff for the purpose of operations. However, there has been no exclusive Aviation University to provide such training anywhere in the country, it has pointed out.
