Protest against uranium project to coincide with Science Congress

K. V. Kurmanath

Hyderabad , Dec. 28

WHILE discussions on `Science and technology to rural areas' will be held at the upcoming Indian Science Congress in Hyderabad, scientists will conduct parallel sessions in villages, extending support to villagers against the proposed uranium mining project in Nalgonda district.

Mr Surendra Gadekar, a nuclear scientist from Gujarat and activists of CANE (Citizens for Alternatives to Nuclear Energy), will take part in the protest march that would cover the proposed sites for the uranium plant coming up in the vicinity of the Nagarjunasagar reservoir.

Mr Peter Dhiel of Amsterdam, who represents WISE (World Information Service on Energy), is also likely to take part in the march, Ms Satya Lakshmi of Movement Against Uranium Project (MAUP) told Business Line.

The `padayatra' will be conducted from January 3 to 7, coinciding with the Science Congress. It will start at Peddagattu village and reach Lambapur village, the proposed mining sites.

From Lambapur, the protesters will cover a distance of 54 kilometres across 18 villages and hold sessions to highlight the dangers of the project to villagers. The walk will end at Seripally village, the proposed site for the processing plant.

"We would also like to bring focus on the serious efforts being made by the Department of Atomic Energy to go ahead with the project despite the protests from the locals," she said.

The CPI (Maoist), which is active in the Nalgonda district, is also opposed to the move to set up the uranium plant. It damaged the testing equipment some time back. It has not come out with any statement after the project got the environmental clearance from the Ministry of Environment and Forests last week.
