`Fly ash blended cement enhances durability'

Our Bureau

Visakhapatnam , Dec. 27

BLENDED cements are essential for enhancing durability and service life of a structure and fly ash is a great product for mixing with cement, according to Dr N. Kalidas, Director of the Institute for Solid Waste Research and Ecological Balance. He was speaking here at an interactive session organised by Madras Cements to promote its fly ash-based product, Ramco Super.

``There is entrapped heat in fly ash and for that matter even in sand. This micro heat proves to be a source of sound cement chemistry, facilitating sustainable micro structure growth in concrete towards densification, impermeability and durability,'' he explained.

Experts predicted that structures such as Hoovers Dam in the Las Vegas, the USA, built with such low-grade blended cement would last a thousand years, he said and advocated the use of fly ash for blending.

Mr K. Venkateswara Rao, Officer, product development, Madras Cements, said his company was concentrating on blended cements and he explained the features of Ramco Super.

Mr D. Srinivasa Raju, the branch manager, presented the company's profile.
