Shipping Call to maintain seaways Our Bureau
Mangalore , Dec. 23 THE Union Government's help has been sought for maintaining the seaways on the lines of national highways. Speaking at a seminar on `Capital and maintenance dredging practices in major ports of India', organised by New Mangalore Port Trust here on Friday, Mr P.M. Mahapatra, Deputy Chairman of Mormugao Port Trust, said the seminar should come out with a recommendation seeking Government's help for maintaining the seaways. The maintenance activities include carrying out dredging operations in major ports. While the national highways are being upgraded on BOT basis, this can be adopted in maintaining seaways also. When all the major ports are achieving high throughput, the Government should consider extending fiscal assistance for maintaining the seaways. This will cushion the activities at the ports, he said. Mr Suresh Kevalramani, Chairman and Managing Director of Jaisu Shipping Company, said that capital-dredging market is difficult to operate as soil conditions vary from one port to another.
