Strategy Corporate - Announcements Taj Business Hotels repositions coffee shops Our Bureau
Chennai , Dec 19 THE Taj Business Hotels is repositioning its coffee shops, starting with The Verandah at the Taj Connemara, as part of a renovation programme. The new concept includes introduction of a contemporary mix of cuisines - at The Verandah it would be Italian, Anglo-Indian, and North Indian. Other features would be an open plan kitchen, which will enable guests see some items being freshly cooked. There will be an emphasis on wellness, healthy food, styles of cooking, local flavours, and `do it yourself' options like juices and breakfast food. Ms Jyoti Narang, COO, Taj Business Hotels, said that the renovation programme was started three years ago on the product and service experiences at its key hotels. She said that extensive research was carried out in India as well as in Europe, the US, and South-East Asia. In the first phase, the understanding was to create contemporary room design. These new rooms had hard flooring, wall mounted plasma TVs with DVD and surround sound systems, ergonomic furniture, task lighting, and shower stall instead of bathtub, among others. The room renovations were done in Bangalore, Chennai, Mumbai, Pune, Visakhapatnam, and Chandigarh. She said that the process is likely to continue over the next few years. In the second phase of change, the food and beverage outlets were repositioned, based on consumer research. The concept was "high energy" bars like the Distil in Taj Connemara, Ice at the Taj Residency, Bangalore and Lava at Taj Chandigarh, Chandigarh. Ms Narang said that early next year a similar bar would be opened at the Taj President, Mumbai in place of the Library Bar. The expenditure on the renovation of rooms and restaurants this year has been about Rs 100 crore, she added. Ms Narang also said that the company was also looking at tier II cities like Ranchi, Bhubaneswar, Amritsar, and Ludhiana, to set up business class hotels. New Taj Business Hotels will be coming up at Bangalore, Mumbai, Chennai, Vijayawada, and Coimbatore.
