Gujarat Cabinet clears VAT

Our Bureau

Gandhinagar , Dec. 15

WITH the BJP-ruled States finally deciding to migrate to the value-added tax (VAT) regime, the Gujarat Cabinet has given an in-principle decision to adopt the new tax system.

The State, however, still has certain concerns over the Central sales tax (CST). The actual date to implement VAT will be decided after the BJP-ruled States of Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand present their case before the Empowered Committee on VAT on Friday.

Gujarat is set to seek compensation for the loss of about Rs 900 crore annually due to the proposed reduction in CST from 4 per cent to 2 per cent, Government sources said. Most of the States had migrated to the VAT regime on April 1 this year.
