Call to double ICD/CFS capacity

Our Bureau

Chennai , Dec. 13

THE number of dry ports (inland container deports and container freight stations) need to be more than doubled in the next couple of years to meet the increasing container volume, according to Mr Ennarasu Karunesan, Chief Executive Officer, Chennai Container Terminal.

"We need to double the ICD/CFS capacity to provide the best services to the trade. Our ports turnaround ships quickly, and provide an efficient service at the container terminal. However, we cannot evacuate boxes out of the terminal," he said.

Speaking at a conference on "Building Warehousing Competitiveness: Next Gen Warehousing" organised by the CII Institute of Logistics, Mr Karunesan said, there are 90 CFS with a capacity to handle one million TEUs (twenty foot equivalent units) and 64 ICDs to handle one million TEUs. However, the country would be handling over 5 million TEUs, and there is only 30 per cent back up facility instead of 60-70 per cent, he said.
