Kamal Nath to discuss Asean-India FTA today

New Delhi , Dec. 8

THE Commerce and Industry Minister, Mr Kamal Nath, has been invited to attend an informal AEM (Asean Economic Ministers) - India consultation on December 9 on the sidelines of the Asean summit being held from December 12-14 in Kuala Lumpur.

The main objective of the informal consultations is to discuss the progress of negotiations on Asean-India Free Trade Agreement (FTA).

The framework agreement on Comprehensive Economic Co-operation Agreement (CECA) between Asean and India was signed on December 8, 2003 in Bali, Indonesia.

Under this framework agreement, the Asean-India Trade Negotiating Committee (AITNC) had been mandated to negotiate the various components to realise the Asean-India Free Trade Area.

Due to India's stand on the issue of Rules of Origin, the negotiations by the AINTC were not progressing as scheduled.

The matter has now been resolved and the AINTC is expected to conclude the negotiations in the near future, the release said.

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, has directed Mr Kamal Nath to represent India at the India-Asean Ministerial meeting, which is scheduled to be held in Kuala Lumpur during the same period.
