Govt responsible for CAS failure, says House panel

Our Bureau

New Delhi , Dec. 8

THE Parliamentary Standing Committee on Information Technology has said that the Government's inability to take care of the ground realities has resulted in the "rejection of the implementation of the Conditional Access System (CAS) by the metros".

The report of the committee on CAS was tabled in the Lok Sabha on Thursday. CAS was introduced by the NDA government but has been implemented only in Chennai after it ran into controversies. The committee also wanted the Government to fix the rates of pay channels after consultation with the broadcasters/multi-system operators and cable TV operators instead of leaving the price fixation to market forces.

The Committee has also asked the Government to increase the number of free-to-air channels available under CAS from 35 to 60 channels.
