Health Package for curbing spread of AIDS, says Manmohan Our Bureau
New Delhi , Dec. 1 IN line with its commitment made in the Common Minimum Programme, the Government will launch a comprehensive package for curbing the spread of HIV/AIDS in India. It will comprise preventive services, promotional measures and interventions for counselling and treatment. Inaugurating a `National convention on HIV/AIDS for youth leaders of political parties' organised by the National AIDS Control Organisation here, the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, said that the HIV/AIDS epidemic would impact the economy, society and the future of the country. The National AIDS Control Programme should be moved out of the "narrow confines" of the health department and made an integral part of all Government departments. While the National AIDS Control Programme (NACP) has been mainstreamed and made an integral part of the National Rural Health Mission, a massive capacity building, awareness and counselling campaign should be launched. On the availability of anti-retro viral drugs, the Prime Minister said that enough is not being done with the Government lagging in its target of providing free treatment to one lakh people. "Prices must come down further to make these drugs more affordable and accessible to all," he added. Dr Singh said that it is vital to educate young men and women about how to lead a `healthy and safe sexual life'. "This is particularly important given our traditional inhibitions about discussing such matters within our families and among our colleagues, quite apart from doing so in public," he said. The Union Health Minister, Dr Anbumani Ramadoss, said that the HIV infection was spreading rapidly among the general public with rural India accounting for 59 per cent of infection compared with 41 per cent in the cities.
