Bangalore , Nov. 28 THE Global Green Company, a part of the $2-billion Thapar Group, a leading exporter of pickled gherkins, will be investing $1 million to increase the processing capacity in its plants located near Bangalore and in Andhra Pradesh. The company, which has been registering a 40 per cent growth since its consolidation from its earlier large portfolio of produce, had plans to tap the huge potential for various products such as fresh vegetables and even organically cultivated agricultural produces. No definite steps had been taken so far, said Mr Vineet Chhbabra, Managing Director. He said the company would focus only on gherkins, whose export market is growing. Though it had a brief indulgence in mushroom exports, it decided to exit from it to concentrate on the more popular gherkins. The company exports pickled gherkins in jars to 23 countries. Except in South Africa, where it sells its own brand Tify, Global Green supplies its pickled gherkins to leading stores who sell under their private labels. Though its Tify brand of pickled gherkins, Spanish olives, babycorn and fruit conserves occupy the shelves of the Indian stores, the domestic market accounted only 2 per cent of its total sales. Global Green achieved a turnover of Rs 120 crore during the fiscal 2005. Mr Chhabra said with 12,000 farmers under contract cultivation, the company was planning to introduce an insurance scheme to its farmers to strengthen its relationship with them. With several new companies entering the lucrative gherkin business, Mr Chhabra said with Global Green's `seeds to shelf' policy of helping the farmers in the complete value chain of providing quality seeds to procurement of the produce, his company has been able to withstand the "poaching" from other companies.
