New Delhi , Nov. 28

INDIAN Oil Corporation (IndianOil) on Monday said there was an urgent need to address such issues as adulteration and diversification of petroleum products plaguing the industry.

Speaking to media persons, Mr Sarthak Behuria, IndianOil Chairman, said the industry has been discussing these issues with the Petroleum Ministry and sought certain revision in the Marketing Discipline Guidelines (MDG), which held the company official concerned responsible for adulteration and diversification in a retail outlet.

Mr Behuria said the industry has sought limiting the sale of subsidised kerosene through the public distribution system (PDS) to people living below the poverty line and ration cardholders to prevent its diversion for adulteration of auto fuels. IndianOil, which recently lost a young sales officer to the adulteration mafia, blamed the price differential in subsidised kerosene, petrol and diesel for the thriving adulteration business.

``We think supply of subsidised kerosene should be restricted to BPL families so as to reduce the number of users. This way the scope of diversion gets limited,'' Mr Behuria said.

The adulteration business had attained the stature of a mafia due to differential pricing of kerosene and auto fuels, he said. Currently, kerosene is priced at less than Rs 10 a litre and one litre of diesel costs about Rs 32, making it highly lucrative to sell kerosene to blend with diesel.
