Our Bureau

Chennai , Nov. 24

A CONSORTIUM of sponsors, headed by the Tamil Nadu Governor, will sponsor the Chennai Open Tennis Championships 2006, the ATP Tour event in the city.

Apart from the Government, the sponsors include Indian Bank, Indian Overseas Bank and United India Insurance Co in the platinum category and the Chennai Petroleum Corporation, Larsen & Toubro, Murugappa Group, MyTVS, Saint-Gobain and Steel Authority of India in the gold category.

The consortium will sponsor the event up until 2009.

Speaking at a curtain raiser for the tournament, Mr Ravi Krishnan, Managing Director, IMG-TWI South Asia and International Vice-President, IMG, said that with the existing funds, the organisers could have brought either a few players in the top fifty rankings, or one top ranked player, and they chose to go with the latter and bring World No. 2 Rafael Nadal to the tournament this year.
