Stem cell research centre to come up at CMC, Vellore

THE President, Mr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, will lay the foundation stone for stem cells research centre at Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore and also deliver the Dr Ida S Scudder Founder's Day oration on December 1.
The Rs 18-crore research centre will be built in collaboration with the Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India. "CMC has been selected to undertake research recognising the potential of stem cells in combating diseases," Dr George Chandy, Director, CMC told a press conference here today.
The centre will focus on the use of bone marrow and cord blood derived from adult stem cells for treatment of ailments, Dr Chandy said.
Answering a question, Dr Chandy said that the hospital's turnover last year was Rs 180 crore, and the not-for-profit hospital generated a surplus of Rs 52 crore. The surplus was utilised in providing free or subsidised treatment in various parts of the country under the hospital's outreach programme.
