Elcot scouting for partner to set up IT park in Coimbatore

Coimbatore , Nov. 19

THE State Information Technology Secretary, Dr C. Chandramouli, said on Saturday that the IT park in Coimbatore proposed by the Government would come up soon.

"We have started the clearance work. Elcot has taken over the land. The issue now is in identifying the partner." Dr Chandramouli was participating in the sixth edition of coimbatoreIT.com, a Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) initiative.

Speaking on the sidelines of this event, he told newspersons that the park would replicate the Tidel model. "It would be a joint initiative with private participation. In the case of the Coimbatore IT park proposal, the Tamil Nadu Government has sought the Centre's nod for according a SEZ (Special Economic Zone) rank. We are hoping that this suggestion would be cleared at the next SEZ group meeting to be held later this month."

When asked whether the prospective partner had been identified, he replied in the negative. "But we foresee no problem in selecting the partner. We have overcome the initial teething problems," he added.

Earlier, addressing the CII members, the TN IT Secretary said that the Government was considering a pilot project of one Gbps (Giga bits per second) connectivity in Coimbatore to take IT to the rural masses. "It is a Planning Commission initiative," he said and called upon the participants to lend a hand to this project.
