WHEN Lt Col Suresh Hivale and Lt Col R.M. Joshi set out on their motorcycles with a group of others from the armed forces in Lucknow on November 8, they were not going on a joy ride.
The group of 10 are doctors from the armed forces who are on a mission to spread awareness about AIDS, a journey that will take them over a distance of 5,763 km across the length and breadth of the country.
Two-wheeler major TVS Motor Company's collaboration with the Armed Forces Medical Services has resulted in this unique programme where the doctors will spread the word around and dispel myths and misinformation about the dreaded disease amongst the armed forces.
"The army has already taken up programs to empower itself to fight the disease. Our mission will complement this by actually talking to them at the army posts informally and allowing them to air their fears and doubts about it,'' Lt Col Joshi says.
Each visit by the team of doctors is preceded by a workshop at post, usually addressed by religious heads who spread the word amongst the families about the wisdom of adopting safe sex practices.
The rally has till now passed through Varanasi, Ranchi, Kolkata, Sambalpur, Kamptee and was flagged off from Pune by Major General Y. Singh at the parade ground here on Friday. The next leg of the journey will take the doctors to Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Jodhpur, Bikaner, Firozpur, Udhampur and Chandigarh before ending in Delhi on December 1, the World AIDS Day.
