Wipro eyes big market in Gulf

Vimala Vasan

In 2004-05 alone, Wipro had year on year growth of 85 per cent in the APAC/West Asia region.

Abu Dhabi , Nov 15

INDIAN IT major Wipro is anticipating a surge in operations in the Gulf and West Asia, as the regional market moves into higher values services and IT is increasingly relied upon to drive business.

In Q2, 2005-06, the company had a year on year growth of 28 per cent in the Asia Pacific/West Asia region.

Among a string of contracts bagged in recent months, Wipro is providing business intelligence and data warehousing solution to UAE-based Thuraya Satellite Communications to streamline information flow across applications and provide a panoramic view of data traffic, segment and corporate performance.

Thuraya will be able to consolidate information from various sources for performance analysis, research, decision support and forecasting, according to a statement from Wipro made available to Business Line.

Mr Suresh Vaswani, President, Wipro, said in Dubai that the West Asian region constituted a critical part of Wipro's global business strategy. "Our company is extremely committed to building a strong customer base in UAE. We bring in our global experience, domain skills and technology understanding to drive business momentum in our customer engagements."

Wipro recognises the region as a strategic market. In 2004-05 alone, Wipro had year on year growth of 85 per cent in the APAC/West Asia region.

In Q2 ending September 2005, Arab National Bank, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, selected Wipro as its partner in managing the data centre operations of its `Disaster Recovery Centre'. In addition, Manso Group, with interests in petrochemicals, steel, laminates and transportation business, has chosen Wipro to implement Enterprise Application Platform — SAP Enterprise Version.

"We see a strong demand for services like package implementation, infrastructure management, testing, application development and maintenance and customisation services," added Mr Vaswani.

Wipro started operations in the West Asian region in June 2001.

In subsequent years it expanded to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar, Bahrain and Kuwait.

Today it has a strong customer base in the region which includes Doha Bank, Qatar Petroleum, Gulf Insurance Company, Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority, Al Ansari Exchange, Dubai Metal and Commodity Center, SPC and Dubai Municipality among others.

Wipro has two regional offices — one in Dubai Internet City handling operations in UAE, Qatar, Oman and Kuwait, and the second at Al Khobar catering to Saudi Arabia and Bahrain.
