Shining prospects

Ornamental fish displayed at a breeding centre in Kochi. Called `living jewels', ornamental fish are in great demand now owing to their attractive looks. They have become a source for earning foreign exchange. The Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA) has estimated that about $5 billion could be earned through export of aquarium fish. Ornamental fish breeding is yet to gain ground in the country and there are only 150 full time and 1,500 part time breeders.
