Pune , Nov. 11

LARSEN & Toubro has set its eyes on Pune to set up an engineering manufacturing facility, expand the IT and engineering services and have its own campus.

Talking to presspersons, Mr A.M. Naik, Chairman & Managing Director, said the company would be putting up its engineering manufacturing facility at Talegaon near Pune.

"As the company has many products under its wing, the company is looking at at least six products, though we have not pinpointed them," he said.

The facility will have close to 400 people on its rolls and be operational by 2007.

Mr Naik said an investment of Rs 600 crore has been earmarked for the IT and engineering services segment.

As an initial step, the company has set up an engineering centre in Pune, with an area of over 80,000 sq. ft. This centre would also accommodate among others, the insurance practice.

The centre would build and deliver frameworks and specific solutions to major global insurance customers. With the addition of this facility, as part of the first phase of expansion, the centre will have a total capacity of about 1,200 seats by the year-end and would host one of the largest data centres in Pune.

Mr Naik said about six such engineering centres are operational in the country and located in New Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, Mysore, Mumbai and Navi Mumbai.

Mr Naik said the company, which began its transformation journey about five years ago, had now become more proactive and were looking at global opportunities.

He said employees, with three years experience, could opt for a transfer to any other unit of their choice.

About retention and training in L&T, Mr Naik said it has launched global management leadership programme for the identification and training of global project managers.

IIIE award for Naik

MR A. M. Naik has been recognised again for professional eminence and has won the `Outstanding Chief Executive Award' from the Indian Institution of Industrial Engineering (IIIE).

The award was presented at the inaugural function of the 47th National Convention of IIIE held here today.

Mr Prithviraj Chavan, Union Minister for State, Prime Minister's Office, presented the award to Mr Naik.
