UPBEAT over the increasing number of nuclear power projects in the pipeline, the Nuclear Fuel Complex (NFC), here is planning to double its fuel fabrication facilities, and even revive its plans of a NFC two facility.
Being the sole supplier of the fuel requirements for the Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWR), the `workhorse' reactor of the string of power plants under the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL), the expansion plan taken up opens up both responsibility and opportunity to the NFC.
The Chief Executive of NFC, Mr R. Kalidas, told Business Line that the new power plants site okayed at Ratnagiri, the expansions at Tarapur, Kaiga and Rajasthan demand a major beefing up of the existing capacities at NFC as well as adding new ones.
Luckily, the funds required for the expansion are available and it is a matter of implementing as per demand. Already, the production capacities at the existing plants in Hyderabad are being increased. The NFC has eight different plants, making fuel and products for the Indian nuclear power programme, Mr Kalidas said.
With the current capabilities the NFC can deliver products for the three stages of India's nuclear power programme.
