New Delhi , Nov 3

THE world's sixth largest airline, Continental Airlines, has started a daily non-stop flight between Delhi and New York.

The flight cuts travel time between the two cities by over two-and-a-half hours and shortens the travel time between Delhi and most US mainland cities.

The flight is operated with a 283-seater Boeing 777 aircraft. It will leave New Delhi at 11-45 p.m. and arrive in Newark at 5-05 a.m. the following day.

The return flight leaves Newark at 8-50 p.m. and arrives here at 9-15 p.m.

Earlier, addressing a function at the airport on the arrival of the inaugural flight, the US Ambassador to India, Mr David C. Mulford, outlined the various initiatives that are being taken to strengthen the US-India aviation relationship, apart from the open-sky agreement reached between the two countries.

"We have established an Aviation Co-operation Programme, a unique public-private partnership designed to support and strengthen India's civil aviation system through technical assistance, job training, and personnel exchange programmes.

"The participating American companies will fund the programme, supported by a grant from the US Trade and Development Agency," he added.

Besides, final touches are also being given to a regional transport and trade facilitation conference for South Asian countries, which is scheduled to be held in Mumbai, Mr Mulford said.
