Chennai , Oct. 30 THE Tuticorin Port Trust (TPT) and Neyveli Lignite Corporation (NLC) have signed an agreement for a proposed 1,000 MW thermal plant to be set up on the Tuticorin port land. Two new thermal power plants, each 500 MW capacity, at a cost of Rs 4,600 crore are proposed to be set up by NLC Tamil Nadu Power Ltd, a joint venture between NLC and the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB). The plants would come up adjacent to the Tuticorin Thermal Power Station (TTPS) of TNEB, according to a press release issued by the port trust. The plants were likely to be commissioned in 2008. Annually, about 5.5 million tonnes of thermal coal would be handled in the port through a proposed captive jetty to be constructed for this purpose. This wouldbe part of the port's inner harbour development, the release said. As part of the agreement, the port trust would offer 123 hectares of land to NLC on lease (108 hectares for the two plants and 25 for employees' housing) and permission to draw seawater from port basin for coolant water system. The port has allotted 86 hectares of sea area near the existing TTPS fly ash dyke and 225 hectares near northern breakwaters for construction of fly ash dyke. It had also given permission to install and operate a conveyor system from the captive jetty to the plants, the release said.
