Hyderabad , Oct. 28

IN an effort to extend the benefits of information technology to the masses, the Government has initiated steps to bring down prices of personal computers further and to launch fonts in other official languages within eight months.

The Union Minister for Information Technology and Communication, Mr Dayanidhi Maran, on Friday said the PC penetration was crucial to bridge the digital divide in the country and the recent launch of PCs at Rs 9,970 is one such effort.

Mr Maran, who was here to launch Telugu fonts and software developed by C-Dac, announced that fonts in other official languages would be ready within the next eight months.

This initiative, along with efforts to provide affordable PCs, develop content that meets people's requirements and provide easy access, will ensure that a larger section of the population benefits from technology.

While the growth of wireless phones has exceeded that of fixed line, the Government has set a target of 250 million fixed lines by 2007. Domestic manufacture of telecom equipment and foreign investments are beginning to happen and this can make it more affordable.

As a part of efforts to boost telecom infrastructure, the Government has initiated steps to revive the ITI plant at Rae Baraelly for manufacture of GSM equipment.

BSNL has proposed to provide additional four million mobile connectivity in Andhra Pradesh by the year-end, he said.

Complimenting the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-Dac) for developing language interface fonts in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu, Mr Maran said "our roadmap for language technology includes similar release in all the 22 official languages as also develop language technologies for speech and allied areas. This would help people in various parts of the country access information and services in their own language."
