CPI (M) Central Committee to examine note on IT sector unions in Dec

Our Bureau

New Delhi , Oct. 26

THE CPI (M) Polit Bureau will prepare a comprehensive note on the nature of work of IT sector workers, their rights to employment and working conditions.

The note will be placed before the party's Central Committee meeting in the middle of December that would examine it for taking a stand on the trade union rights of such workers.

Briefing newspersons here on Wednesday after the two-day meeting of the Polit Bureau, the party General Secretary, Mr Prakash Karat, said that the issue is whether this sector would qualify for essential services. It is already a vital service, but not an essential one in terms of law.

"The question is there are certain services in the IT sector, which have continuous nature of operations. Some of them fall in vital services category, but not essential services. Of course, some of the IT firms or BPOs may by connected with essential services," Mr Karat said.

He said that the party is of the view that IT sector workers, like in all the other sectors, should have the right to organise themselves into trade unions for collective bargaining rights, but it is for the unions to decide on exercising the right to strike.

"The Polit Bureau, including the West Bengal Chief Minister, Mr Buddhadeb Bhattacharya, unanimously asserted that employees in this sector should have the right to form trade unions and collective bargaining," he said.

"Even in West Bengal, the IT sector falls under the public utility service and the workers have to give a 15-day notice for going on strike," he added.
