ONGC gets green signal for drilling in Mahanadi basin

Pratim Ranjan Bose

Kolkata , Oct. 26

ONGC has finally been awarded environmental clearance for exploratory drilling in the Mahanadi basin on the Orissa sea coast.

The clearance was delayed by almost a year due to concerns over the impact on the endangered Olive Ridley turtles which visit the Orissa coast every year during January-March for breeding.

Though stray nesting and breeding of the turtles were noticed in many places along the eastern coast, mass nesting was traditionally recorded at the Devi, the Gahirmata, and the Rushikulya river mouth beaches.

However, according to conservationists groups, improper sea fishing practices using trawlers kills thousands of visiting turtles every year.

According to available estimates, the death toll crossed the 1,00,000-mark in the last decade of which 7,500 died in the last season.

According to sources, after much consideration, the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) has now allowed carrying out drilling activity in MN-OSN- 2002/2 and MN-DWN-98/3 offshore blocks with a number of pre-conditions.

To avoid any impact on marine wildlife, the exploratory activities will be monitored by the Indian Coast Guard and the National Institute of Oceanography, Goa.
