Telecommunications GSM, CDMA operators meet Parliamentary panel on spectrum issue Our Bureau
New Delhi , Oct. 24 WITH congestion on mobile networks worsening across the country, the GSM and CDMA operators today met the Parliamentary standing committee to present their case for releasing additional spectrum. The two rival camps have been at loggerheads over spectrum allocation, which has delayed the Government's efforts to announce a policy for releasing additional radio frequency for cellular usage. The Association of Unified Service Providers of India (AUSPI) representing, the CDMA camp, said that the Government must give at least 20 Mhz of radio frequency as per international practice. "There should be absolute equality between the two competing technologies GSM and CDMA. "The policy's main thrust must be equal amount of spectrum allocation. The criteria for usage and efficiency should be uniformly applicable to all operators irrespective of the technology," AUSPI said. CDMA operators including Reliance Infocomm and Tata Teleservices also said that additional frequency should be made available in the 800 Mhz and 1900 Mhz band in which handsets and infrastructure are readily available. On the other hand, the GSM operators said that equality must be maintained in spectrum charges. "Present spectrum practices discriminate against GSM operators and their 50 million customers. CDMA operators are being given a backdoor entry for third generation services and CDMA operators are being given cost and competitive edge over GSM," the Cellular Operators Association of India said.
