Agricultural Institutions ICRISAT develops chickpea hybrid Our Bureau
Hyderabad , Oct. 2 SCIENTISTS at the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) here have developed a chickpea hybrid, which is resistant to disease and boosts yields. The hybrid is a cross between a regularly cultivated variety (cicer arietinum) and a wild species (cicer bijugum). Chickpea is the world's third most important food legume. Poor and marginal farmers in the semi-arid tropics depend on it. Announcing the development here, Dr William Dar, Director-General of ICRISAT, said, "The wild species used in the crossing had many desirable characteristics such as resistance to Ascochyta blight, botrytis grey mould and to Helicoverpa the menacing pod borer." Dr Dar said, "Some of these traits are expected to occur in the hybrids. Crossing the cultivated and wild chickpea is expected to produce a hardy plant that will be able to stand up better to harsh weather and pest attacks," he said.
