Mangalore , Sept. 15

THE Coast Guard District Headquarters No. 3 will observe International Coastal Cleanup Day in 10 beaches of Karnataka on September 17.

Addressing presspersons here on Thursday, Commandant S.K. Chaudhry, Commander, Coast Guard, Karnataka, said that many governmental and non-governmental organisations, and schools and colleges have confirmed their participation in the cleanup operation.

Beaches such as Someshwar, Ullal, Tannirbavi, Panambur and Surathkal in Dakshina Kannada; Malpe and Kaup in Udupi district; and Murdeshwar and Gokarna in Uttara Kannada district have been identified for cleanup operations.

A similar event last year evoked good response with 4,060 people participating in the event. He said that 188 tonnes of debris were collected along 59.1 km of coastline in 10 beaches.

Terming the International Coastal Cleanup Day as the largest one-day volunteer event in the world, Mr Chaudhry said that the Coast Guard is taking the lead in coordinating it in the country.
