Agricultural Policy KPRS plans agitations against farm policies on Sept 29 Our Bureau
Mangalore , Sept. 11 THE Karnataka Pranta Raitha Sangha (KPRS) will stage road and rail `roko' agitations in the State on September 29, in protest against the various policies of the Union Government. Addressing newspersons here on Saturday, Mr Bayya Reddy, General Secretary of KPRS, said that the United Progressive Alliance Government is following the agricultural policies of the previous NDA Government. He said that the Seed Act 2004, the Agriculture Produce Marketing Committee Act 2004 and the Electricity Act 2003 would prove detrimental to the interests of farmers. The Seed Act will help the multinational companies to take full control of seeds in the country, Mr Reddy said, adding that they are controlling nearly 40 per cent of the seeds. . KPRS will hold awareness meetings on these issues in various parts of the State from September 21 to 27. Stating that the group will seek the cooperation of other farmers' associations on these issues, he said a meeting would be held on September 13 in this regard. Representatives from various farmers' associations are likely to attend the meeting. The Union Government, which is silent on the issues related to farmers and labourers to be discussed at the WTO meeting in Hong Kong in December, should come out with a white paper on this matter, he said.
