Policy Logistics - Airlines Govt to buy Boeing Business Jets for VVIP travel Our Bureau
New Delhi , Sept 6 THE President, the Vice-President, the Prime Minister, and senior Ministers could soon be travelling in the comfort of a Boeing Business Jet (BBJ). Speaking to newspersons after the meeting of Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), the Defence Minister, Mr Pranab Mukherjee, said that the Government has decided to purchase BBJs. The latest decision comes days after the Government decided to purchase five Embraer jets for transporting VVIPs. The Government is likely to purchase three BBJs; the Jet is capable of travelling up to 6,000 nautical miles non-stop. The induction of the aircraft into the VVIP fleet will give the option of flying 10-30 people non-stop between India and the UK and Tokyo and Mumbai, among other destinations. The aircraft will be fitted with a missile deflecting security system. Each aircraft is likely to cost the Government about $60 million. The Government is said to be purchasing the BBJ version that has Boeing 737-700 fuselage with a Boeing 737-800 wing. Since 1996, when the BBJ programme started, 91 of the Boeing 737-700 and 737-800 derivatives have been sold with orders coming from customers in India, Asia, Africa, Russia and West Asia.
