Thiruvananthapuram , Aug. 25

THE Asian Development Bank (ADB) will help the Government of Uttaranchal prepare a plan to improve the State's road network with a technical assistance grant of $3,98,000.

According to a press release issued by ADB, the grant is intended to assist the Public Works Department (PWD) of Uttaranchal review and finalise a 10-year master plan for roads in the State and complete financing plans for projects of various durations.

The technical assistance grant will also help prepare a plan to boost the Uttaranchal PWD's capacity.

The grant will also help prepare a project to strengthen rural-urban connections and link poor rural producers with markets in towns and cities, and ports, the release added.

The State Government's master plan will cover around 3,000 km of State and district roads as well as 13,000 km of village and lower class roads.

Under the plan, every village, town and city will be connected to local economic centres, social services, and major cities in the State through a network of all-weather roads and pedestrian links, the press release explained.

Uttaranchal's PWD will serve as the executing agency for the technical assistance, which is due to be carried out in two concurrent components over about five months, the release added.
