New Delhi , Aug. 23

THE Prime Minister's Infrastructure Committee at its meeting here on Monday gave its in-principle approval for the modernisation of Chennai and Kolkata airports.

Official sources told Business Line that the decision of the committee is a reiteration of the Government's commitment to create world-class infrastructure in the two cities. The officials indicated that no decision has been taken on the method to be followed for the modernisation of the two airports nor has any time been fixed for the projects to be taken up.

"At the meeting, the need for the two cities to get world-class airports was emphasised. However, other details still need to be worked out," a senior Government official said.

The issue of modernising the airport in Chennai was raised at the committee meeting by the Minister for Communications and IT, Mr Dayanidhi Maran. The West Bengal Government is also said to be keen to develop the airport in Kolkata.

The sources indicated that the initial work on modernising the two airports is likely to begin after the transaction document is given to the bidders participating in the modernisation and restructuring of Delhi and Mumbai airports.

A team from the Centre is likely to visit Chennai and Kolkata to prepare a feasibility report for the two airports after the transaction document is given to the bidders , the officials said.

The Union Cabinet has already approved a proposal for the restructuring and modernisation of Delhi and Mumbai airports through the joint venture route with the private sector partner holding a majority stake.
