Govt announces excise refund scheme for tsunami-hit areas

Our Bureau

New Delhi , Aug 17

THE Central Government has come up with an excise duty refund scheme to support the reconstruction of houses in the tsunami-affected districts of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Kerala and in Pondicherry and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

The scheme provides for refund of excise duty paid on cement and steel used in the construction of new houses including temporary shelters by the agencies approved for such reconstruction work by the respective State or Union Territory Governments.

The benefit would be with respect to cement and steel used in houses constructed on or after the April 1, 2005 and before July 31, 2006.

The benefit under the scheme would be restricted to six per cent of the cost of construction of such house or houses or Rs 9,000 per house constructed, whichever is less, according to an official release.

As per the scheme, a manufacturer of cement and steel would have to pay full duty at the time of clearance and would not be eligible for the refund of duty paid.
