P.S. Sundar

Coonoor , Aug 17

A SIX-MEMBER delegation of the Committee on Tea Crisis from the Nilgiris is currently in New Delhi to call on the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, to press the Government to fix a minimum price for tea.

The delegation comprised Mr M. Bhojarajan (President Nilgiris Small Tea Growers Association), Mr J. Hutchi Gowder (President, Nilgiris Bought Leaf Tea Manufacturers' Association), Mr T. Gundan (former Udhagamandalam MLA), Mr Gopal (District President, Congress), Mr T. Rangaiah and Mr R. Iyaroo (both Conveners).

"We will also meet the Finance Minister, Mr P. Chidambaram, and the Commerce Minister, Mr Kamal Nath," Mr Rangaiah told Business Line.

In the memorandum, the committee has attached a list of bought-leaf factories, which had fetched at least Rs 5 a kg more than the district average at the Coonoor auctions.

"We are, therefore, requesting the PM to intervene by invoking Section 30 of the Tea Act, 1953, and fix a minimum price of Rs 50 for the teas sold through the auctions.
