THE Raw Materials Division (RMD) of Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) has recorded a growth of 22.1 per cent in despatch of iron ore in the first quarter of the current financial year compared with the corresponding quarter of the previous fiscal.

According to a press release issued by RMD, the iron ore mines at Kiriburu, Meghahatuburu, Barsua, and Bolani registered growth of 44.7 per cent, 23.5 per cent, 7.4 per cent and 6.4 per cent respectively.

"These mines despatched 1.19 million tonnes (mt), 1.34 mt, 0.41 mt, and 0.99 mt respectively. Along with the enhanced production and dispatch in the last month, the quality of iron ore has also improved through better mine planning, strategic ore beneficiation and blending," the release stated.

It further stated that despatch of fluxes such as dolomite and limestone from the RMD mines have shown a growth of 5.4 per cent and 1.1 per cent respectively.

RMD has already initiated action to increase its production so that it could match the growing demand of the four integrated steel plants of SAIL.

The steel major has already set a target of 20 million tonnes of hot metal production by 2012.

"To meet this target SAIL would require 32.5 million tonnes of iron ore per annum for which RMD has been working on the expansion plan," the release stated.

The major projects identified are capacity expansion of Bolani mines to 5 million tonnes per annum and development of central block at Meghahatuburu mine to 4.3 million tonnes per annum.

RMD would also develop the south block at Kiriburu and increase its production to 4.25 million tonnes per annum. The division has planned to develop the Taldih block and a new mine at Thakurani.

RMD had taken steps to improve the iron ore quality by optimising the washing plant at Meghahatuburu by introducing stub-cyclones and replacement of old liners among others.
