President happy with rebuilding efforts at Nagapattinam

Coimbatore , July 6

"WHEN I visited the tsunami-hit Nagapattinam last week, initially, I thought I was going to meet only the dejected lot of people whose lives and families were ravaged by the killer waves. But when I went there, actually, I found out that they had no time to worry and they are all busy rebuilding."

This is the impression the country's first citizen could gain after his recent visit to Nagapattinam, the worst affected area in the tsunami attack last December.

"I met villagers, farmers, small traders and fishermen, all were subjected to the disaster, but they manifest their confidence now and are rebuilding their lives," Dr Kalam said.

He added that a large part of the confidence building came from the relief and restoration provided by the Government, NGOs and self-help groups, besides philanthropy from citizens. He said the PURA village groups in the coastal belt would help create linkages for income generation by villagers.
