Hindustan Zinc kicks off expansion project in Rajasthan

Mumbai , June 25

THE integrated zinc producer, Hindustan Zinc Ltd (HZL), has started the commercial production of its 1,70,000-tonnes-per-annum (tpa) expansion project at Chanderiya in Rajasthan. This increases the company's total capacity to 4,00,000 tpa, a company communication said.

The Rs 1,500-crore project includes a 154-megawatt captive power plant and an expansion up to 3.8 mtpa of zinc ore at Rampura Agucha mine. The company is also undertaking a three-fold increase of its silver production and expanding its lead capacity from 35,000 tonnes to 85,000 tonnes a year. This project is nearing completion as per schedule.

HZL, part of Vedanta Resources, now becomes the sixth largest producer of zinc globally, the company said. According to Mr Anil Agarwal, Chairman of Vedanta Resources, HZL makes the country self-sufficient in zinc production, while saving over $300 million annually in foreign exchange.
