Rs 4 cr sanctioned to prevent sea erosion in Udupi

THE Karnataka Tourism Minister, Mr D.T. Jayakumar, who is also Udupi district in-charge, has said that Rs 4 crore will be released to prevent sea erosion in Udupi district.
Addressing newspersons after visiting the areas affected by sea erosion at Muloor village in Udupi on Monday, he said the State Government has sanctioned Rs 3 crore for constructing temporary seawalls in Udupi district. The Udupi Zilla Panchayat will sanction the remaining Rs 1 crore.
The Deputy Commissioner of Udupi district and the port officials have been asked to take up work on temporary seawall construction in the affected area.
He said that the Pune-based Central Water Power Research Centre , which has done a study on this problem in coastal Karnataka, will submit its report to the Government soon.
Nearly 300 metres of area near the seashore at Muloor are facing the threat of erosion.
Mr Jayakumar said that he will bring the problems arising out of sea erosion to the notice of the Chief Minister, Mr Dharam Singh, who holds the portfolio of Ports and Fisheries.
