Railways `Rlys to focus on increasing freight, passenger earnings' Our Bureau
New Delhi , June 15 THE Railway Minister, Mr Lalu Prasad , has said that the Railways was working towards increasing the earnings in both passenger and freight haulage. Addressing newspersons here, he said the Railways had formulated specific plans such as launching of the Passenger Profile Management Project and the Mission 700 million tonnes freight-loading target for improving earnings. After emerging from a meeting with the General Managers of Railway zones and other senior officials of the Railway Board here, Mr Prasad told newspersons that though the target of loading for the year 2004-05 was 635 million tonnes, the internal target was fixed at 700 million tonnes. "To achieve this, steps have been undertaken to improve wagon availability, freight train examination maintenance practices, speed of passengers trains, availability of locomotives, reduction in equipment failures and infrastructural development required for enhanced loading," he said. Calling upon the General Managers of Zonal Railways to ensure passenger safety and security on trains, Mr Prasad said in case of any mishap these officials would be held responsible and would be liable to be penalised. "Safety has always been the foremost priority of the Indian Railways," he said, adding that even though there had been an improvement of 28 per cent in consequential train accidents during April 2004 to March 2005 as compared to the previous year, it need to be further improved. He said implementation of the recommendations of the Railway Safety Review Committee and the high level committee on disaster management was reviewed during the meeting and was decided that the target would be strictly adhered to.
