Welcome Wal-Mart

This is with reference to the article "Is Wal-Mart what the doctor prescribes?" (Business Line, May 27). While the article seems to accept some benefits that the Wal-Mart's entry will bring, it makes a lot of assumptions, one such being that Wal-Mart will import from China.

Let us not forget that there is going to be Indian Staff; there will be Indian suppliers/manufacturers who will use Indian logistics; and they will use the Indian media for promotion, etc.

This will positively raise the level of income for many. Add to this multiplier effect that will create employment opportunities.

One thing is sure to happen: Indian retailers will have to be on their toes. They will have to get organised, be more cost conscious, and, give better service to customers.

The Indian consumer has been taken for granted too long. The time has come to change.
