`Sethusamudram will give impetus to industrial growth'

Our Correspondent

Madurai , May 23

TRADE and industrial bodies have hailed the Union Government's approval of the Sethusamudram canal project.

The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Southern Region, Madurai Zone, in a release, has said that the project would give impetus to industrial growth in southern districts and help create more employment opportunities.

It would also boost marine-related industrial activities and the Tuticorin port could attract more international traffic by acting as an alternative port to Colombo and Singapore, the Vice-Chairman of CII, Madurai, Mr T. Johnson, observed.

In another release, the Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry has said the project would help develop minor ports in Colachel, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam and Thondi and improve the economic status of backward coastal districts. The congestion in major ports would be eased and foreign exchange earnings would increase.

The chamber President, Mr S. Rethinavelu, has expressed happiness over the clearance of the project.

The Tamilnadu Foodgrains Merchants Association, in a release, has said that the implementation of the Sethusamudram canal project would help in the development of many small ports in the Eastern coast.
