Airlines SpiceJet to target train passengers Ashwini Phadnis
New Delhi , April 28 THE Indian Railways could soon face increased competition from the domestic aviation sector. The new start up airline, SpiceJet, which takes to the skies by the middle of next month, is to concentrate on various segments of travellers, including the long distance traveller and those using the Indian Railways. "Our pricing will be a huge force for those wanting to travel. We want to be known as the airline for the common man. The airline will offer low fares and provide an opportunity to the passenger to get from one place to another in time and safely. Besides they will also have the experience of flying in a modern aircraft," the airline Director, Mr Ajay Singh, told Business Line. The airline also plans to offer modern facilities not available to airline passengers at present. However, except for the promise of low fares, the airline is tight lipped about what would be charged even though the inaugural flight is just two weeks away. SpiceJet received its second Boeing 737 aircraft today and will start operations with three Boeing 737 new generation aircraft. In the recent past, almost all the existing domestic airline have launched various schemes to woo the traveller, including those travelling by rail. SpiceJet plans to enter the market offering a "high frequency" of flights on a few sectors and will look to expand its operations to cover the entire country in a phased manner. Initially, the airline will start operations with flights to western part of the country. SpiceJet tickets will primarily be available through the Web and its call centres although other avenues of sale will also be available. The ticket sales are expected to commence in the first week of May.
