Shipping Industry & Economy - Exports & Imports EEPC calls for Vizag port upgradation Our Bureau
Hyderabad , April 27 THE Engineering Export Promotion Council (EEPC) has called for upgradation of ports to make them handle mother vessels. "Exporters will be spending money at Visakhapatnam Port to get products board onto the feeder vessels and then at Colombo or Singapore to transfer the products onto the mother vessels. This involves both additional expenditure and consumption of time," said Mr Mahesh K. Desai, Vice-Chairman of EEPC. The council has asked the State Government to take up with the Centre the issue of upgrading the Visakhapatnam Port to handle mother vessels. Addressing a gathering after the inauguration of council's sub-regional officer on Wednesday, Mr Desai said that a facility that can handle mother vessels was coming up at Kochi. There is a proposal to set up one at Visakhapatnam too. Responding to his request, Mr K. Rosaiah, the State Finance Minister, asked the council to submit a note on the issue. Mr Desai said that the council would act as a catalyst in developing the engineering sector in the State. "We are chalking out a three-year rolling plan in association with the State Government. This focused approach would make a difference for our members," he added. Under the plan, the council would conduct workshops and seminars to keep the exporters posted on the latest happenings in the sector. Mr Rosaiah said that the State was in the process of setting up a special economic zone (SEZ) along the upcoming Visakhapatnam-Kakinada corridor. He added that the Government plans to develop more SEZs as it would trigger growth of exports.
