AI refutes charges

New Delhi , April 27

AIR India has refuted the charges levelled by the European aircraft manufacturer Airbus Industrie regarding the process followed by the airline to purchase 50 aircraft.

An AI spokesman said the airline has not "deviated even one bit" from the specifications prescribed in the Request For Proposal (RFP), as has been alleged.

"Airbus's contention that AI has gone in for nine abreast seating (which is uncomfortable) cannot be held valid as the prerogative of deciding on the seats, its specifications vests with the airline and not with the manufacturer," the airline said in a statement.

The statement gives a point-by-point rebuttal of the allegations made by Airbus Industrie.

The spokesman also denied the allegation that while Boeing was given a chance to make a presentation, Airbus Industrie was not given a similar opportunity by the Techno Economic Negotiating Committee.

The reality, the spokesperson added, is that when the RFP was issued, all manufacturers were given an option to make a presentation.

This option was exercised by Boeing and GE, among others. However, Airbus Industrie sent a letter seeking a meeting with the committee to discuss issues relating to aircraft evaluation process.

"At no stage did Airbus Industrie make use of this opportunity to make a product presentation. For Airbus Industrie to now say they were denied an opportunity to make a presentation while Boeing was given one is totally incorrect," the statement says.
