New Delhi , April 25

THE Indian Railways has set aside about Rs 270 crore for implementing Global System of Mobile Communications - Railways (GSM-R) in North, North-Central, Eastern, East-Central and Northeast Frontier Railways.

While the GSM-R tenders have already been awarded in Eastern, East Central and Northeast Frontier Railways, the Ministry is in the process of awarding the projects to Northern and North Central Railways.

"We would be spending about Rs 270 crore in implementing the GSM-R projects across the five Railway zones," said Mr S.C. Gupta, Member-Electrical, Indian Railways.

The first operations of GSM-R system would start in June 2006 in Eastern Railways, he added.

On whether the Indian Railways plans to extend the GSM-R implementation to other Railway zones, Mr Gupta said: "It would depend on the feedback we get from the initial round of implementation. "
