Railways S. Rly to try Korean paint on tracks to prevent rust Our Bureau
Chennai , April 25 SOUTHERN Railway is understood to have placed a trial order with Korea International Business Corporation (KIBC) for painting two stretches of railway tracks - one between Basin Bridge and Villivakkam near Chennai and the other near Tiruchi. KIBC markets solventless epoxy paint manufactured by Dong Hae Chemical Company Ltd, Korea. The Railways will paint the lower portions of rails that are most prone to corrosion because of discharge from train toilets, according to Mr K.V. Jeganathan, General Manager, KIBC. The paint, technically called `Free Mastic G-316', has also been used by a few companies here, including Malladi Drugs and Pharmaceuticals Ltd. The paint has some technical properties because of which it can be painted upon several surfaces without a coating of primer, Mr Jeganathan told Business Line. For example, the paint can be applied directly on water or oil rusted surfaces, steel, stainless steel and fibre-glass surfaces. It can also be used for underwater coating. Mr Jeganathan said that the paint was recently used in the swimming pools of Kishkintha theme park near Chennai. It has also been used by an oil PSU for plugging holes in metal tanks. The viscosity of the paint is low and flows easily, but when applied to a surface it forms a very thick film. The Railways trial order was obtained after KIBC demonstrated the efficacy of the paint last year by coating a part of the Pamban bridge at Rameswaram, which is on the sea and is exposed to the most corrosive conditions.
