Rain, thundershowers continue to lash Kerala

THODUPUZHA in Idukki district recorded the heaviest yet overnight spell of summer showers when 10 cm of rain pummelled the bustling plantation town on April 24.

Rain or thundershowers occurred at many places in the State on April 21 and 24, a few places on the 20th and 22nd and at isolated places on the 18th, 19th and 23rd.

According to the Agromet Bulletin issued by the Met Office, Thiruvananthapuram, the chief amounts of rainfall in cm are (April 18 to 24):

April 18: Neyyattinkara - 4

April 19: Neyyattinkara - 2

April 20: Neyyattinkara - 4; and Cherthala, Kochi Airport, Perumbavur, Kozha, Thiruvananthapuram (both airport and city) and Varkala - 2

April 21: Kottayam - 6; Vadakkanchery - 4; and Thiruvananthapuram Airport - 2

April 22: Alathur and Ottapalam - 6 each; Pattambi and Perinthalmanna - five each; Thrithala - 4; Nedumangad - 3; and Karipur Airport - 2

April 23: Chittur - 3; Punalur and Konni - 2 each

April 24: Thodupuzha - 10; Piravom - 5; Perinthalmanna - 3; and Konni, Karipur Airport, Kumarakom and Thalassery - 2 each

Mean maximum temperature varied between 33°C and 35°C in various districts. Vellanikkara in Thrissur recorded the highest maximum of 34.6°C on April 19. Mean relative humidity ranged from 70 per cent and 82 per cent, mean cloud coverage between 3 okta and 6 okta and mean wind speed, 2 kmph and 10 kmph.

Forecast valid until the morning of April 27 (Wednesday) spoke about the possibility of rain or thundershowers at a few places in all districts.

Outlook for the subsequent two days did not indicate any significant change.

Stage and state of crops: Harvesting operations have started in the Puncha paddy crop. Nursery preparation for the Virippu crop is nearing completion in areas where summer showers have been received. New planting of ginger, turmeric and tapioca is being continued with. In rubber and coconut, pits are being dug for new plantings. Application of lime is being taken up wherever summer showers have been received. In pepper, planting of `live standards' continues. Cashew and fruit crops, harvesting operations are apace.

Farm advisory: Farmers are advised to select paddy varieties maturing in 115 to 125 days for ensuring better yields. Weedicides can be applied six days subsequent to sowing.

Planting of ginger and turmeric can continue. New planting, top dressing and intercultural operations can be taken up in tapioca and banana. Weeding, plant protection and irrigation can be carried out in cardamom nurseries.

Preventive measures should be taken against thrips in cardamom gardens. Red palm weevil can lead to severe destruction of young plants.

In rubber, budding of stock seedlings may be started with for purposes of production of planting material in areas where rainfall has been recorded. Harvesting can continue in cashew and land prepared for new planting. New planting can also be taken up in banana, coconut and arecanut with receipt of rain.
