AI fleet acquisition: US pitching hard for Boeing

Our Bureau

New Delhi , April 14

THE US Government is pitching hard on behalf of aircraft manufacturer, Boeing, even as Air India is yet to take a final decision on the acquisition of 50 new aircraft.

Speaking to newspersons after signing an open skies aviation agreement with India, the US Transportation Secretary, Mr Norman Mineta, hoped that the Indian Government would give a "fair consideration to the offer tendered by Boeing." He further added, "We know that the same message was conveyed by the US President, Mr George Bush, to the Indian Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh."

The board of Air India is likely to take a decision on buying 50 new planes for over $6 billion in the next two-three weeks. Mr Ajay Prasad, Secretary, Ministry of Civil Aviation, said that both Airbus SAS and Boeing "will get an equal chance." The decision will be based on the financial and technical offers they make. "Ultimately, we will buy what's best suited for us and the cheapest," he added.
