Bengal allots more for tourism promotion

Our Bureau

Kolkata , April 11

THE West Bengal Department of Tourism has hiked by 50 per cent its promotion and publicity budget for 2005-06. In the current fiscal, the State has earmarked Rs 1.05 crore for tourism promotion and its publicity.

In 2004-05, the State's tourism promotion and publicity budget was Rs 70 lakh.

Stating this at a press conference held here on Monday to unveil details of Tourism Festival 2005, Mr T.K. Burman, Principal Secretary in West Bengal's Tourism Department, said the idea was to attract tourists from outside West Bengal. Besides, the focus would also be on promoting places of tourist interest within the State to the locals.

The festival would be held during April 15-19. In addition to West Bengal, other States and organisations connected with the tourism industry would also put up stalls and showcase their attractions.
